Hosted by The Sacramento Observer, one of the nation's most honored black publications, the Expo included the 30 Under 30 the achievements and leadership of 30 African American men and women, in the Sacramento region, under the age of 30 years old, and Dyson gave the keynote address to the crowd of young awardees. "In our day and age, you have to reach people where they are. That's the beautiful thing about what you have to do with meeting young people. You have to talk to young people in their own language and wherethey are," he said of his address to the young achievers. "Not only [is there] hip-hop, which is an incredibly important language for young people, but also the language of compassion, concern, and care. I think people are looking for people that are older who are able to understand that they have many perspectives." As a professor at Georgetown University, Dyson is no stranger to speaking to ambitious youth. He told the Observer's Antonio Harvey and EURweb's Lee Bailey that he's found an effective way to tap into the "ground swell" of emotion, intelligence, and reflection of young people. "And also to see that their desire and yearning is to move beyond those limitations," he said. "They're going to be 30 soon. So as you getolder, and you mature, and you evolve, your tastes change; your insight deepens." "And let's not forget that younger people have historically changed the world," he added, reminding everyone that Martin Luther Kingand many of the civil rights activists and leaders were merely in their 20s when they became world famous. "You're talking about people who were able to change the world by virtue of their strength, their intelligence, their insight, their revolutionary zeal and their desire to see social change manifest. That's what I want to tap into and acknowledge in them even as we're critical of certain elements of so-called 'youth culture'," he said. "A lot of older people do not acknowledge younger people. They talk about them, they dismiss them, but they will not embrace them as co-conspirators for excellence in the race. Dyson applauded Observer publishers Dr. William H. Lee & Kathryn Lee for the expo and the "30 Under 30" breakfast saying that at the least, the event highlights the vastly important achievements of young black people that have done extraordinary things. "This particular event suggests that there are bright and brilliant young people who are extremely talented, who deserve to be acknowledged and I'm glad he does it," he said. Another point the scholar made was about the importance of ethnic media, particularly black media outlets like the expo sponsor "The Observer" and EURweb. "When you think about all these black businesses and black bookstores are closing down, black newspapers are consolidating and going from dailies to once a week, this newspaper holding up for 45 years is extraordinary; especially in the age of cyberspace and the revolution on the Internet. So, when you see this paper, you see an extraordinarily important paper continuing its destiny," he said of "TheObserver." "Black newspapers serve our communities in ways that broader newspapers don't. We're not surprised by Jeremiah Wright. We're not surprised by the discourse and the speech. We're not surprised by what we do internal to our culture." "'The Observer' and Mr. Bailey's EUR ... those are extremely important outlets for black people to get the kind of insight that we'vebeen deprived of and closed out from. Those outlets help us identify with one another; get information to each other; communicate our ideals and our ideas at the same time." Dyson said that black media is an "important organ" for the expression of black thought and opinion, as well as armor to combat vicious stereotypes that prevail in mainstream media. "Black people are hungry for information about themselves. They provide a service to black people who want that kind of information and want to see the best and the brightest of their community represented," he said. "Aren't we all tired of seeing the worst dragged out to be paraded as the symbols and signifiers of our culture and our tribe? Yes.We want to see what other communities see - the best and the brightest of their people and tradition being represented as the norm. The worst of black people is always seen as collective and representative, while the best is considered the exception. That's a tragedy we have to confront." Blige in N.C. 24 hours after apparent nuptials. *Jay-Z was back on the road with Mary J. Blige Saturday and was not wearing a wedding ring despite multiple reports that he finally married his longtime girlfriend Beyonce Knowles the night before. During his sold-out concert in Greensboro, North Carolina, the rapper made no mention of the rumored nuptials that took place at his Tribeca apartment Friday night. But Mary J. couldn't resist giving her co-headliner a shout-out. CHRIS ROCK ON THE WITNESS STAND: Comic testifies in Hollywood wiretap case. *Chris Rock said he had no idea that private investigator was involved in alleged dirty tricks while investigating a woman's claim that Rock had fathered her child. The actor and co-creator of "Everybody Hates Chris" made the statement while testifying in the trial of Hollywood's so-called privateeye to the stars, who is charged with bribery and wiretapping on behalf of dozens of Hollywood celebrities and movie executives. According to Reuters, the comedic actor appeared nervous during his 20 minutes on the witness stand. Rock, 43, told the federal court jury in Los Angeles that he hired Pellicano in 1999 to probe the background of model Monika Zsibrita because he felt he was being shaken down when Zsibrita accused him of fathering her child after a one night stand at the Beverly Hills Hotel. "Someone who is not pregnant with my child claims to be pregnant with my child and requested large sums of money," Rock said, according to Reuters. Prosecutors allege that Pellicano paid a Los Angeles police officer to run unauthorized background checks on Zsibrita. Tests showed later that Rock was not the father but the actor said he again hired Pellicano in 2001 after Zsibrita accused him of raping her during their hotel tryst. Rock, who is not charged with any crime, denied knowing Pellicanowas involved in illegal activities. He testified that Pellicano read himpolice reports reflecting that Zsibrita claimed she had been assaulted. He said Pellicano told him: "I'm going to read it to you but I'm not supposed to have it." The comedian is among about 100 witnesses, including actors Sylvester Stallone, Farrah Fawcett and Paramount Pictures CEO Brad Grey,called to testify for the prosecution. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and tens of thousands of bags have gone missing, costing the airline about 16 million pounds since theterminal's opening last month.=09 UK CHALLENGES SNOOP'S LIFTED BAN: Border Agency appeals court's decisionto allow rapper into the country. *Britain's Border Agency said Friday it will appeal a court's decision that allows Snoop Dogg back into the country after he was banned in 2007 following an incident at London's Heathrow Airport. The rapper successfully appealed the ban and received entry clearance from an asylum and immigration tribunal in January. But the Border Agency said it plans to challenge the ruling at a hearing this week. In March 2007, Snoop had to cancel a tour of Britain with fellow rap icon Sean "Diddy" Combs after authorities denied him a visa. The decision was sparked by the artist's 2006 arrest on charges of violent disorder and starting a brawl at Heathrow in which seven officers were injured. Lisa Miceli, 35, is also requesting that the court lift a temporary restraining order imposed after Jordan filed a harassment suit against her, reports the Associated Press. Miceli continues to insist that Jordan is her son's biological father, but the basketball legend's lawsuit says a pair of 2005 paternity tests rules him out. Jordan's attorney Frederick J. Sperling participated in a hearing by phone Friday, denying Miceli's claims that the restraining order prevents her from negotiating a child-support agreement settlement with Jordan, reports the Associated Press. "There is not going to be a settlement," Sperling told Crawford County Judge Gordon Miller. "Mr. Jordan is not the father of her child, and we're not going to engage in any discussions on that." Miller did not immediately rule on Miceli's request for a third test. Self-published with distributor Atlas Books of Ohio, "Being BobbyBrown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But=85" is co-written withDerrick Handspike, an Atlanta hip-hop producer and author of several books, notes Friedman. When asked the motive behind dishing dirt on ex-wife Whitney Houston, Handspike answered: "We are very wealthy from this already." Handspike intimated that there are "investors," adding, "It's a joint-venture kind of thing." In addition to chapters about his cocaine use, which were excerpted in New York newspapers last week, Handspike says that Brown has also overdosed on heroin. "No one knows that," he told Friedman. "He had a stroke. They said he had a heart attack but he had a stroke." In the book, Brown says his heart stopped three times and he had to be revived with shock paddles. According to Handspike, Brown also admits to hitting Houston. "Heconsidered it horse play," he said. "The reason Whitney called the police was that he laughed at her and then left.
