Your TWIG Editors, Karen Carstens and David Brown Current Affairs FRIENDS ALWAYS: Candy Bomber Inspires at Campaign Kick-Off Gail Halvorsen © Thomas Cunningham Legendary "Candy Bomber" Gail Halvorsen recently launched the FRIENDS ALWAYS campaign celebrating the 60th anniversary of the BerlinAirlift before more than 700 servicemen and women of the U.S. Air Force at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. Gail S. Halvorsen, Col. USAF (Ret.), 86, is a World War II veteranand hero of the Berlin Airlift. Halvorsen was the first pilot to drop bundles of candy wrapped in handkerchiefs as miniature parachutes to the hungry children of Berlin when a Soviet blockade shut down all ground-based supply routes to the war-ravaged city. His kindness earned him the nickname “Uncle Wiggly Wings”, the Flyer” and the “Berlin Candy Bomber - and legions of lifelong fans, for whom the Airlift still remains a vibrant inspiration today. Speaking at the "Phoenix Rally", a conference of high-ranking U.S. Air Force officers, Halvorsen summed up the values that made the Berlin Airlift a triumph of freedom: "attitude, integrity, service before self, His moving words did not fall on deaf ears: The unprecedented and bold Berlin Airlift is deeply and permanently etched into the history of the U.S. Air Force. Inspiration: TheC-54 "Spirit of Freedom" in Hangar 3 at the MacDill Air Force Base, © Bundeswehr, courtesy of the U.S. Air Force Halvorsen gave a keynote address at this gathering of U.S. servicemen and women. His words visibly inspired those invited by four-star General and U.S. Air Mobility Commander Arthur J. Lichte to attend the March 25 event. The highlight came on March 26 in Hangar 3 of the MacDill Air Force Base, where the bleachers were filled with some 600 people. Norma Henning, the German honorary consul in Naples, FL, was among them. General Lichte, Halvorsen, Brigadier General Hans-Georg Schmidt, who heads the German liaison command CENTCOM, and Airlift veteran Bill Morrissey walked upto the podium. TV journalist and filmmaker Robert E. Frye, who had previously presented a new version of his documentary "The Berlin Airlift" at the conference, moderated the podium discussion on "the airlift - a legacy of global reach, hope and with great sensitivity. One of the most emotional moments came when he spontaneously asked a young Air Force member to describe in his own words how he saved a child's life during a humanitarian mission. Generations inspired each other on that memorable day at MacDill Air Force Base, during which the C-54 "Spirit of Freedom" provided the perfect backdrop beneath a gigantic star-spangled banner. One of the last remaining airborne "raisin bombers", the"Spirit of Freedom" is lovingly maintained by the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation with support from the Berlin-based foundation and the German Embassy. The historic aircraft will make many more important pitstops this year as part of the FRIENDS ALWAYS campaign. According to the survey, the global view of Germany's influence is predominantly positive. On average, 56 percent of people questioned had apositive opinion of Germany, compared to only 18 percent who did not. The BBC World Service Poll has been tracking opinion across the globe since 2005, with 23 countries regularly polled while others change fromyear to year. This year is the first time that it included Germany and it discovered that Germany is viewed more positively than negatively in all 34 countries - something no other country in the survey can boast. These latest results are based on 17,457 in-home or telephone interviews conducted by the international polling firm GlobeScan together with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University ofMaryland. GlobeScan coordinated fieldwork between Oct. 31, 2007 and Jan. 25, 2008. In his keynote address at the conference, held recently at the Federal Foreign Office to highlight the UN's World Water Day (March 22), Steinmeier advocated enhanced transboundary water management and stressed Germany's willingness to support the countries of this region in this endeavor: "We want to work together on a longer-term basis. To this end we are offering a structured water partnership between Germany and Central Asia." Water is a basic necessity of life. Ensuring that humanity has a supply of clean water is an enormous challenge. Less than 1% of the world's water supplies are available as drinking water. Some 1.1 billion people throughout the world are without adequate access to water, while around 2.4 billion people do not have adequate sanitation. This situation could worsen further: theworld's population and the claims on water consumption are increasing – and with it the overall demand for water worldwide. At the same time, climate change is having an impact on precipitation variability and the volume of water available. When access to water becomes more difficult, the potential for conflict also rises. The German Advisory Council on Global Change has analyzed the risks posed by climate change. It has drawn attentionto major risks to international stability. They include: the increase in the number of fragile states the destabilization of the world economy international conflicts over the control of resources climate-induced migration Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and the European Commission published a similar analysis in a joint report. Climate change amplifies problems and the main danger is thus that it will prove too much for states and regions already faced with other difficulties. "People were observed who were quite clearly monitoring the stadium withthe possible intention of carrying out an attack," Herrmann told national commercial news broadcaster n-tv on March 28, acknowledging the incident for the first time. One person regarded as a potential security threat had been deported, he said. News of the possible threat had been kept from the public "because we did not want to spread unnecessary fear," Herrmann said. The Federal Labor Agency said the number unemployed in seasonally adjusted terms fell 55,000 to 3.285 million in March leading to the jobless rate sinking to 7.8 percent from 8 percent in February. Analysts had expected unemployment to drop by just 45,000 last month. "Employment continues to grow and hiring by companies remains on a high level," said labor agency chief Weise releasing the data. He went on to predict that the nation's dolequeues could shrink further this year despite analysts' projections of slackening economic growth and a number of German companies announcing big layoffs as part of a new wave of corporate restructuring in the country. "We could head towards the 3-million mark in September or October," said Weise. That said, however, the pace of the decline in the numbers out of work appears to be slowing with the March fall following a 75,000-drop in February and an 89,000-drop in January. "The growth inemployment will be slower as 2008 progresses," said Eckart Tuchtfeld, economist with Commerzbank AG. But for the moment evidence continues to point to the German economy managing to withstand global economic downturn with strong demand in the world's leading emerging economies such as inAsia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe helping to offset slowinggrowth in other parts of the world. Gabriel said plans for the petrol at German pumps to include a 10 percent biofuel component might be scrapped if it seemed likely that vehicle engines would be damaged by the mixture. The group Greenpeace, whichhas swung against biofuel, said meanwhile its laboratory tests showed thatsome of the biofuel already being mixed with the other main motor fuel, diesel, could not possibly be home grown. Greenpeace said its tests showed that 20 percent of the bio component in the diesel currently on sale at German fillingstations was made from soybeans, a crop that does not grow in Germany, butcan grow on land cleared of tropical forests. German law will require petrol to be 10 percent "bio" ethanol and diesel to be 7 percent of plant origin by next year. By 2020, the ratio is supposed to rise to 17 percent of the mixture coming out the pumps. Other European Union nations have matching targets. The main German motoring club, the ADAC, hasnow offered a reason to change this plan with claims that bio ethnanol will rot the hoses and gaskets in 3 million of the cars on German roads. Thosecars' owners would be forced to buy a more expensive, non-plant super grade of petrol instead. "We won't put this regulation into effect ifmore than 1 million vehicles are affected," Gabriel told the newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten. Car manufacturers and importers are to briefthe government soon on how many cars are likely to be affected. Deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg conceded the regulation might be scrapped, but insisted government biofuel policy was intact. Economists say the diversion of land to fuelgrowing is reducing the world's potential to grow food at a time when grain demand in Asia is soaring. Greenpeace attacked the biofuel industry, saying tropical forests were being destroyed to grow fuel crops. Chart-topping German boy band Tokio Hotel has cancelled its US concerts planned for April as singer Bill Kaulitz, 18, prepared for surgery onhis over-used vocal cords, it emerged last Saturday (March 29). The pop act had earlier scratched its European concert tour because Kaulitz, idolized by hundreds of thousands of teenage girls across the globe, was at risk of turning from singer to squawker. The band's David Jost, said: "Because Bill needs time to recuperate, we are cancelling all North American concerts April 17-30." The group sold out the venues it booked for a short tour of Los Angeles, New York and Canada in February, with fans singing along to the English version of the hit The group normally performs in German. Tokio Hotel's first album, is set for release in the United States in the second week of May. Concert promotions company Four Artists had earlier cancelled a tour that was to take place in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, as well as Scandinavia, Slovenia and Serbia. The vocal cords are a mucous-membrane organ that is the main feature in phonation or voice production. Growths can develop on the cords, often as a result of over-use. Singers frequently develop the condition. The voice becomes hoarse and the singer cannot maintain a note for as long as before. One common way to return the additional tissue is by microsurgery.
