Medina, OH Greetings! This month we offer workshop materials from February's "Celebrate and Learn" conference and a reminder that National Volunteer Week is coming up at the end of April. There also is the upcoming National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Atlanta in June for your consideration. It's the largest of its type in the world. Read about a new grant opportunity from the Weinberg Foundation supporting informal care and learn how to get in touch with Della if you need an "angel" at your next special event. Find out about a new partnership among organizations that transport the elderly. The partnership known as the STP Exchange is a peer-to-peer network of transportation providers. Two interesting Webinars are on slate for April. The first addresses changes to programs that serve people with HIV/AIDS. The second looks into how to make homes safer for elderly and disabled residents. Learn about the services that congregations in America are providing and discover seniorDECISION, a communications exchange about services for the elderly. Watch your mail for a surprise package later this month from AARP. You will want to check out the most frequently downloaded article of 2007 from the Stanford Social Innovation Review about what makes for a "high-impact" nonprofit. It may surprise you. You also should visit the "Free Management Library," a veritable treasure chest of resources for the nonprofit manager. And get to know Paul G., a former CEO who is now a care recipient in Ohio. The transition has opened his eyes to a new life (and his old one). Webinar on Working with People with HIV/AIDS Scott Blades, director of Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network will lead a Webinar discussion in April about changes in the care of people living with HIV/AIDS. The changes have led many programs to redefine their mission, including Scott's own program in Tucson. The Webinar will deal both with training volunteers to be more sensitive and effective in working with their care recipients, and with making Faith in Action programs more responsive to changes in the field of HIV/AIDS. The highest compliment we have heard about the meeting was that the presentations were first-rate. We are delighted that many of our speakers are willing to share their materials with program directors. Download Conference presentations . . . - Webinar on Home Safety Warren Burris of AARP will lead a Webinar on how to stay safe at home with particular emphasis on safety for the elderly. Everyone wants to live in a home that fits his or her needs and abilities. Unfortunately, most people don't discuss or think about the appropriateness of their home until a crisis occurs. Falls are a huge problem. The Center for Disease Control reports that, "Among people 65 years and older, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths and the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. In 2005, more than 15,800 people over 65 died of fall-related injuries. Over the years many program directors have asked the National Program Office (NPO) if Della Reese can be booked to appear at an event for an individual Faith in Action program. The answer is yes, but you must contact her manager, producer (and husband), Franklin Lett. The article has a link to a video by founders, Rob and Jennifer Leibreich that explains in more detail how the program helps consumers to find quality care and housing for older adults. Visit the seniorDECISION Web site . . . - Creating High-Impact Nonprofits The Stanford Social Innovation Review is an amazing resource for nonprofit organizations. They recently released a list of the most frequently downloaded articles from 2007. At the top of the list is an article co-authored by Heather McLeod Grant and Leslie R. Crutchfield that challenges most widely-held assumptions about what leads to success. They say, "Conventional wisdom says that scaling social innovation starts with strengthening internal management capabilities. This study of 12 high-impact nonprofits, however, shows that real social change happens when organizations go outside their own walls and find creative ways to enlist the help of others." Quoting from their article, they go on to uncover six "myths" about successful nonprofits: Myth #1: Perfect Management. Some of the organizations we studied are not exemplary models of generally accepted management principles. Although adequate management is necessary, it is not sufficient for creating significant social impact. Myth #2: Brand-Name Awareness. A handful of groups we studied are household names, but a few hardly focus on marketing at all. For some, traditional mass marketing is a critical part of their impact strategy; for others, it's unimportant. Myth #3: A Breakthrough New Idea. Although some groups come up with radical innovation, others take old ideas and tweak them until they achieve success. Myth #4: Textbook Mission Statements. All of these nonprofits look to compelling missions, visions and shared values. But only a few of these groups spend time fine-tuning their mission statement on paper; most of them are too busy living it. Myth #5: High Ratings on Conventional Metrics. When we looked at traditional measures of nonprofit efficiency, many of these groups didn't score well, because they don't adhere to misleading metrics such as overhead ratios. Myth #6: Large Budgets. We discovered that size doesn't correlate with impact. Some of these nonprofits have made a big impact with large budgets; others have achieved similar impact with much smaller budgets. As we dismissed the conventional wisdom about what makes high-impact nonprofits successful, we realized we had discovered a new way of understanding this sector - and what enables the best nonprofits to create lasting social change. So what do the authors recommend? Read this compelling article for the answers that may surprise and challenge you. Read the article about "Creating High-Impact Nonprofits" . . . - Promise to Mary: A Story of Faith in Action By now, all Faith in Action programs should have received their one complimentary copy of Paul Jellinek's new book, Promise to Mary: A Story of Faith in Action. It's a great recognition gift for your volunteers and special friends of your program. Order additional copies of Paul's book from Amazon . . . - AARP Collaboration Continues Mid-month, AARP will be sending each Faith in Action program a packet with samples of caregiving materials that will be helpful to volunteers, care receivers and their families. The packet will include a form to order additional copies for distribution. It is another example of the many tangible benefits that our relationship with AARP has produced. Thank you AARP! It was produced by Interfaith Caregivers in Trenton, NJ, Mary Ann Isaac, director. There is a lot of ground covered in this presentation and not all of it is likely to apply to your situation. Nevertheless, some elements are universal and it may be worth your time to see how another Faith in Action program goes about the important work of training its volunteers.
