In This Issue: * ANGELA BASSETT GETS STAR * OPRAH WINFREY'S BIG TAKE? * DRE'S 'LONG ROAD' INCLUDED TEEN PREGNANCY * BLACK MAN SENTENCED IN WHITE TEEN'S SHOOTING 'MEET THE BROWNS': Bassett and Fox team for Tyler -- by Kenya M Yarbrough *"Meet the Browns," starring Angela Bassett and Rick Fox, opens today in theaters nationwide. The film is the latest Tyler Perry to hit the big screen and like those before, features an all-star cast of actors and comedic actors, including Perry as Madea (and Joe). In the film, Bassett plays single mom Brenda who takes her family from Chicago to Georgia for the funeral of her father - whom she never met. There, she meets the family she never knew, but will never forget. Perry admitted that he wrote the screenplay with Bassett in mind. The two had even conversed about the project years before. Bassett said that she was very happy to find out that the role was going to come to fruition, being a fan of the but admitted that she wasn't counting on it. "I'd seen a couple of his movies and I saw one of his plays," Bassett said of not really knowing Perry. She explained that the night she saw the play 'Madea Goes to Jail,' she met Tyler Perry and he mentioned that he wanted to work with her. Bassett said that was all she heard for a while. And then, while she was in Atlanta, Perry came to meet with her. "I think he was filming 'Why Did I Get Married,' she recalled. "He came to say hello and he said, 'I got 30 pages,' and he said that he wrote them for me." Flattered, but still not convinced, Bassett admitted that after that she just forgot about it. "It's 30 pages; you can't do much with that. I [have] to see it when you got it complete," she said. "A lot of people say they'd like to work with you or we should work together. But does it really happen? Do your paths really cross? Do you get to it? A lot of times it doesn't, but this time it really did." Though it was two deliberate pursuits of Bassett, for her co-star Fox it was two chance meetings to score the role of Harry. "I no longer try to control [my path], I just embrace it and accept it and a lot of blessings have happened and this happened to be the latest one," Fox said. "Here I was with my trainer out on a Sunday running, trying to keep in shape and prepared. As [Perry] tells it, he was up praying about this very role and didn't know where to go. He was crossing from Sunset Plaza, here comes his white Bentley, we scoot across and he honks." Fox said he recognized Perry and shared pleasantries and exchanged phone numbers. "At that point, I never thought anything would come out of it as quickly as it did," he said. But after his run, in a new location, Fox stopped for a protein shake and upon leaving the store, saw Perry across the street pulling up the valet. "I'm thinking, 'This is too coincidental." This time, Fox took the opportunity to talk to Perry about his upcoming projects, and convinced him to give him chance. Now, he's got a project with Angela Basset under his belt and a little tutelage from her too. "I was completely overwhelmed up until we got to the set," he admitted. "But we sat down and talked awhile and she got me out of that fan place. She's very open and very gracious. I was so blessed to have her be so receptive to work with me." "I love the collaborative process," Bassett said of being considered a mentor to her cast mates. "People have been good and kind to me. My mom always said, 'Work hard and be nice,' so this is part of it. And we spend too much time together; 16-18 hours a day. And I want it to be as good as we can make it." "Meet the Browns," also starring David Mann, Lance Gross, Margaret Avery, and Jenifer Lewis, opens today. For more on the film, point your browser to Available today! But, it didn't start out that way for her. "Do you ever have one of those days? I woke up and the sun wasn't really shining but then it burst through the clouds and it was glorious. Hallelujah!" Bassett spoke those words to the crowd gathered to watch her accept her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the ceremony, the Yale University trained and Oscar nominated actress was joined by her husband Courtney B. Vance, their children and guests Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne and Rick Fox, her co-star in the new film "Meet the Browns." "You get a lot of no's in this business and you have to have that desire and determination which is what Angela has," Fishburne shared. Whitaker said that Bassett was "a powerful artist, a beautiful person, a mother, a wife, a friend who illuminates my life." Bassett received the Walk of Fame's 2,358th star. T.I.'S JUDGE GETS THE EASTER SPIRIT: Rapper allowed to suspend house arrest for Easter services. *Rapper T.I. will get a break from his house arrest this weekend after a federal magistrate judge ruled Thursday that he'll be allowed to attend Easter services. The artist, born Clifford Harris, is currently confined to a home near Atlanta while awaiting trial on weapons charges. But on Easter Sunday, he'll be granted a reprieve to attend services at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Under the rules, T.I. must be accompanied by a court-approved monitor and one of his attorneys, the judge said. The rapper was arrested Oct. 13, just hours before he was to headline the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. He is charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers and possession of firearms by a convicted felon after an FBI sting caught him allegedly trying to purchase unregistered machine guns and silencers. He was released on bond, but is under house arrest at a home in Henry County. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of the weapons charges if convicted. T.I. had previously asked to host a Thanksgiving Day gathering at the home where he's staying, but the plan was scrapped after the government opposed it. His bond conditions require court approval of visitors. 2008 EURweb Media Expo & Awards Show! --------------- Friday, August 1 at the Los Angeles Convention Center from 11a.m. - 7 pm an historical event that will showcase all components of the media outlets, agencies, PR and media experts and more happens. Timbaland's "Apologize" featuring OneRepublic slides 8-9, while Lupe Fiasco's "Superstar" featuring Matthew Santos holds at No. 10 to round out the top tier. Rapper Shawty Lo's "Shawty Get Loose" makes the biggest jump on the Hot 100 this year with a 92-19 leap. The track, which features Chris Brown and T-Pain, sold 72,000 downloads this week, good enough for a No. 9 debut on Hot Digital Songs. The week's top debut comes from Danity Kane's "Damaged" at No. 64 after selling 31,000 downloads. On Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Keyshia Cole's "I Remember" is No. 1 for a sixth week. On The Billboard 200 album chart, Rick Ross' "Trilla" debuts at No. 1, beating the No. 2 entry of the compilation "NOW 27" and the No. 3 bow of Snoop Dogg's "Ego Trippin'" REMY SHOOTING VICTIM DROPS CIVIL SUIT: Makeda Barnes-Jones may be waiting for outcome of criminal trial. *The woman who says she was shot in the abdomen by Remy Ma has withdrawn a $20 million civil lawsuit against the rapper, but she may be waiting for the outcome of the current criminal trial to refile, according to reports. Makeda Barnes-Joseph filed the civil suit in December of 2007, claiming that Remy Ma, born Remy Smith, shot her over a dispute regarding money stolen from Remy's purse. Jurors in the trial heard directly from Barnes-Joseph on Friday (March 14), when she testified about the argument that led up to her shooting. According to Barnes-Joseph, Remy Ma jumped into Barnes-Joseph's vehicle demanding to examine the contents of her purse. Barnes-Joseph said she denied taking Remy's money and refused to empty her purse so that Remy could look through it herself. It was then that Remy shot her in the stomach, Barnes-Joseph testified. Remy Ma's defense attorney, Ivan Fisher, maintains that the shooting was accidental. The rapper faces up to 25 years in prison if found guilty of the charges against her, including first degree assault. $500 - $1000/Per Day (CA$H) (Just Returning Phone Calls) **No Selling **Not MLM **No Boss Full Training & Support 24/7 Learn From Successful Mentors Daily For Audio Details Visit: (888) 304-9888 (Be Financially Free) Who's Minding Your Civil Rights? Visit: OPRAH WINFREY'S BIG TAKE?: Woman claims mogul jacked her idea for reality show; also, TV host sued by woman caught in fan stampede. *A Boston woman claims to have pitched a reality show idea titled "The Philanthropist" to producers for Oprah Winfrey, only to see her idea come to fruition and air three years later under the name "Oprah's Big Give." According to the New York Daily News' Rush & Malloy column, Darlene Tracy says it was Feb. 2005 when she developed her concept for "The which would feature challenges in which contestants find ways to help the needy. Tracy claims she sent her pitch to Ellen Rakieten, executive producer of Winfrey's talk show, and that Rakieten and another producer, Jennifer Thornton, wrote back to ask for more details. Tracy claims to have mailed a detailed business proposal on March 1, 2005. Four months later, Thornton allegedly told Tracy that Oprah's company, Harpo Productions, was going to pass on her idea. In November 2006, Winfrey announced on her show that she was giving money to audience members so they could help their communities. When Oprah and ABC announced the following month they were teaming up for "Big Give,"Tracy, representing herself, promptly filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Boston seeking to stop "Big Give" from airing, reports the column. Lawyers for Chicago-based Winfrey successfully argued that Massachusetts was the wrong venue in which to try the case. Judge Rya Zobel dismissed Tracy's action, without an opinion. Tracy has since hired a lawyer and filed an appeal that documents her contact with Winfrey's Harpo Productions and sets forth similarities between "The Philanthropist" and "Big Give." A Winfrey spokesman tells the column: "We agree with the judge that [Tracy's] claims against Harpo Productions, Inc. are without merit." According to Rush & Malloy, Tracy's lawsuit may affect future deals involving the show. The columnists state: "We hear that Winfrey and Rakieten have been shopping a companion 'Big Give' book. Winfrey is said to have bypassed Random House because its Crown division signed Kitty Kelley to dig dirt on her. "Instead, we hear, she's been talking to Simon & Schuster - but the prospect of having Tracy name the house in her suit has chilled the deal. Reps for the publisher and Harpo insist that there are no plans for a 'Big Give' book." In other Oprah legal news, a woman filed suit against Harpo and the "Oprah Winfrey Show" claiming she was pushed down the stairs by crazed fans while attending one of the tapings in Chicago. In court documents filed in Cook County, Illinois Circuit Court Wednesday, Orit Greenberg says she was in the audience at Harpo Studios on December 2006 when a fan stampede broke out, causing her to suffer serious injuries. Greenberg says that she, along with an "excess number of patrons," was gathered in a waiting room before the show when audience members were informed they could enter the studio and sit "where they wanted," causing pure havoc. Greenberg says she was pushed down a flight of stairs as everyone "rushed the gate." The suit alleges Harpo failed to properly control the crowd and was careless by allowing guests to seat themselves. Greenberg says she has suffered "severe and permanent injuries" from the incident, and seeks more than $50,000 for medical care and other damages. In her book "Long Road Outta Compton," the mother of rap producer Dr. Dre talks about the day she was surprised with news that she would be a grandmother. Just 17, Dre (real name: Andre Young) had been secretly seeing 16-year-old Lisa Johnson. "Lisa's mom called me to inform me that Andre had been sneaking over to their home and Lisa was now pregnant," Griffin says, according to an excerpt in Page Six. "When I asked her if she was sure that it was Andre who had been with Lisa, she got very upset. She said, 'If I had come home and caught that n**ga in my house, you would have been picking him up in a box.' Needless to say, the conversation went down from there." Ms. Verna snapped back: "My son didn't break in your house and rape your daughter; she let him in, which makes her just as much as fault as he is." In January 1983, Johnson gave birth to Dre's first child, La Tonya Danielle, although the two never married. The relatively light sentence -- two to four years -- for John White, a 54-year-old construction laborer from Miller Place, incensed the family and supporters of Daniel Cicciaro, the 17-year-old who was killed in August 2006. White, who could have received up to 15 years, was convicted in December after an emotional three-week trial in which defense attorneys -- referring to the teenagers as a "lynch mob" -- invoked the nation's violent racist past in arguing the shooting was justified. "Nice message it sends to society that as long as you're black and there's a problem at the end of your driveway you can grab an illegal handgun and shoot someone in the face and get away with it,'' an infuriated Daniel Cicciaro Sr. told reporters while dozens of young women -- friends and relatives of the man's son -- sobbed loudly nearby. "Well let's see what happens when Aaron White gets shot and see how the laws are,'' Cicciaro said, referring to White's teenage son. Defense attorney Frederick Brewington said Cicciaro's remark appeared to be a threat and demanded an investigation. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said the matter was referred to police and the Whites were assigned extra protection at their home.
