Top Stories from Corporate Accountability and WorkPlace on AlterNet April 3rd, 2008 From the editors: According to the Associated Press, we're seeing "The worst case of food inflation in nearly 20 years." Food prices -- which are not included in the calculation of "core inflation" -- rose 5 percent overall in 2007. But the cost of some staple items have ballooned much more than that; "Record-high energy, corn and wheat prices in the past year have led to sticker shock in the grocery aisles," notes the AP. "At $1.32, the average price of a loaf ofbread has increased 32 percent since January 2005. In the last year alone, the average price of carton of eggs has increased almost 50 percent." This is coming after years of stagnant wages, and at a time of rising unemployment. The result, as several media outlets noted this week, is that an all-time record 28 million Americans -- almost one in ten -- are expected toreceive food stamps this year. Most of those families are among the working poor, unable to make ends meet on their paychecks. An ABC News affiliate interviewed James Caldwell, who heads a food bank in Ohio, the heart of thestruggling "rust belt." Caldwell said that an unusual group of people werestarting to use his agency's services: former donors. "What we are starting to see now are individuals, who were once contributors to the food bank, now beginning to access some of that network that we serve because they've been unemployed either temporarily or [on] a permanent basis." Yes, I know these notes have been depressing of late, but the economy doesn't lend itself to a lot of sunny stories right now. It's important to keep up to speed, however, so check out this week's content. Joshua Holland Editor, Corporate Accountability and Workplace coverage ARE WE HEADED FOR THE NEXT GREAT DEPRESSION?
