Top Stories from Rights & Liberties on AlterNet April 2rd, 2008 From the editors: On March 14, 2003, then-Bush administration lawyer John Yoo, one of the fam= ed architects of Bush's torture policy, sent a memo to Pentagon general cou= nsel William Haynes (the same William Haynes who resigned this past Februar= y following revelations of his mandate that military tribunals should be ri= gged). The 81-page document laid out the legal justification for the now-fa= miliar policy of using "harsh" methods during interrogations in the so-call= ed War on Terror. Yesterday, for the first time, Yoo's memo was made public. One expert in military justice describes it as "a monument to executive sup= remacy and the imperial presidency." "It's also a road map for the Pentagon= for fending off any prosecutions," he tells the New York Times. Torture may be old news -- and Yoo may be comfortably esconced in academia = now -- but with CIA director Michael Hayden just last week dismissing water= boarding as an "uninteresting" legal matter, the torture techniques sanctio= ned by his memo are as relevant as ever. For all the noise this long electi= on season, let's not let the calls against torture get drowned out. Visit AlterNet for more Rights & Liberties news and analysis.
