Top Stories from Reproductive Justice & Gender on AlterNet April 2nd, 2008 From the editors: Last week, Barack Obama spoke frankly about race in America, and started a national conversation that needs to continue throughout the election season. Unfortunately, I don't think the candidates will be giving speeches on gender anytime soon -- not because either sexism or racism is "worse" than the other, but because the ways in which we are allowed to publicly discuss issues of sex and gender are different than the ways we are allowed to publicly discuss race. And so yet again, race and gender are separated out in the ways we talk about them, as if all women are white and all people of color are men. But just because Clinton and Obama aren't talking about gender and race together doesn't mean that the rest of us can't. It's time to start a conversation about the myriad issues that form our identities, influence our politics and shape our lives. We need to talk about how those identities intersect, and how that intersection plays out in the real world -- from prisons to the armed forces to international policy. Our realities are complex and overlapping, and simplistic conversations about race vs. gender -- or focusing on either race or gender -- just doesn't cut it anymore.
