Rojo: WiFi 2.0; Open Source Millionaires; Most Valuable Blogs a { color: #003366; underline !important; } The Week in Rojo Rojo: WiFi 2.0; Open Source Millionaires; Most Valuable Blogs Top Stories for the Week of March 24–28, 2008 Having lost last week’s FCC auction for cellphone bandwidth (or won it, from Ars perspective), Google focuses on using the analog-TV spectrum the federal government is ejecting broadcasters from in 2009 (via VentureBeat). Mountain View joins Dell, Intel, HP, Philips and Microsoft to lobby the FCC to open this "white space" up to new uses, especially high-speed Internet connectivity (via Scientific American), which Google telecom counsel manages to call "Wi-Fi on steroids" and "Wi-Fi 2.0" in the same teleconference (via CNET). Google & Co.’s difference is that they want the white space unlicensed and free to all comers, blogs Alley Insider, hopefully gaining tons of long-range bandwidth without the expense of owning spectrum or building cell-type towers (via p2pnet news). The dream of data portability among social networks gets a tiny bit closer as OpenSocial Foundation debuts with Google, MySpace and Yahoo! on board (via Bloggers Blog). Yahoo! also redesigns its homepage with the corporate logo front and center and perhaps a bit more emphasis on search, blogs CyberNet, while Google Blogoscoped offers a visual history of Yahoo! homepages through the ages. But a Yahoo! SEC filing makes Search Engine Land wonder whether Yahoo! thinks a Microsoft buy is inevitable and HipMojo blogs that 27 of 28 analysts are convinced is a done deal. AllThingsD reports that Yahoo! roadshow to sell investors on the company’s new growth plan met only a polite, unenthusiastic response. The Bubble Watch Story of the Week is in Wired, which reports that at least 30 open-source companies put high-mindedness and nobility to aside to sell for at least $1 billion in 2007, creating a potential boomlet of open-source tycoons. In media-blog news, Huffington Post has finally passed Drudge Report in the latest comScore and Nielsen NetRatings measurements, blogs Lost Remote, but Gawker moans that between Drudge’s weather obsession and HuffPo’s celebrities who write about electing beavers, your news agenda is driven by crazies who own hundreds of cats. And although BuzzMachine muses about HuffPo’s ambition to be the "new newspaper," the The New Yorker highlights HuffPo’s miniscule reporting resources and irregular coverage of sports, books and entertainment. It’s the Gawker blog network, though, that tops the list of the 25 most valuable blogs at $150 million according to 24/7 Wall St. and ProBlogging wonders if the list shows HuffPo has peaked. Also on the list: MacRumors, PerezHilton, as well as some other surprises. In politics, Senator Barack Obama releases his 2000–2006 tax returns and reveals two big items: a near-miraculous eightfold increase in gross income from along with a level of charitable giving that’s well short of biblical, blogs TaxProf. Meanwhile, Sen. Hillary Clinton criticizes Obama’s pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, while taking fire for embellishing her landing under fire in war-torn Bosnia (via Donklephant). Turns out Clinton wasn’t under fire, just under her hair, blogs Wake Up greeted by an eight-year-old Bosnian girl who read her a poem. If the presidential got you fried, try these totally apolitical suggestions for relaxing this spring: Watch every single $%!&ing episode of South Park on the Web, thanks to creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker and NewTeeVee. Learn how to create food porn worthy of the glossiest food magazines (thanks to Consumerist). Or find out exactly how your little girl can grow into a great big bimbo (no joke, with a nod to Mashable!). Get the best of the blog world every week with the Week in Rojo email article. It's free!
