SPORT JILL DOUGLAS ON THE WORLD TRACK CYCLING The Track Cycling World Championships are well under way and inside the Manchester Velodrome the heat generated by a full house and the athletes tearing round the track has been incredible. Everyone will say this year is solely about the Olympics, but it will be very advantageous to score psychological blows by arriving in Beijing as a world champion. If you can intimidate your opponent before you even get onto the track, you've got a huge advantage. Team GB are certainly living up to the hype and proving to be the squad to beat, and there aren't many other sports you can say that about. They have built themselves into a huge force on the world stage and it hurt the other nations badly at last year's world championships to hear God Save The Queen played seven times for seven gold medals - and we have heard it four times already this week. Winner of one of those golds was Victoria Pendleton. The glamour girl of British cycling has captured a lot of the headlines recently and she has really matured and come of age over the past couple of years. She formed a formidable partnership to win team sprint gold with 19-year-old Shanaze Reade. Reade is a powerful, powerful lady. To be a BMX world champion and then turn it on on the track is fantastic. Things are no different in the men's team. Chris Hoy recently went on a phenomenal run of 22 consecutive wins in the keiren. Tiger Woods eat your heart out! He is born competitor. His desire to win is incredible and he has a work ethic that's second to none. He, along with Bradley Wiggins, are great leaders and figureheads of the British team. Let's enjoy the rest of the world championships and then all eyes can focus firmly on Beijing. Jill Douglas presents action from the World Track Cycling Championships for the BBC. Jill was talking to Paul Birch THIS WEEKEND ON BBC SPORT CYCLING Saturday: Track Cycling World Championships: 1300-1630, BBC ONE and BBC Sport website.
