JAVAWORLD'S ENTERPRISE JAVA ALERT Solutions for Java developers 03/27/08 Eclipse RT to leverage OSGi as backbone for distributed, component-based development Change is always the top story in high technology. For many it arrives like the flash of a lighting bolt, the sudden realization that something new is in the air. For others, the back story is more important: how long has this change been coming; what is its inception; how far back can we trace it? One of the top stories I'm paying attention to right now is the evolution of OSGi, aka Dynamic Module System for Java, aka JSR 291, aka Equinox, which is (aka) 291's reference implementation. All of which leads us to the announcement of the Eclipse Runtime project at EclipseCon earlier this month. Eclipse RT being, of course, the fervently awaited, OSGi-powered distributed component server-side runtime engine architecture of our dreams! (Yes, I'm using every descriptor there is and avoiding all-caps here.) Well, maybe. Whether OSGi and Eclipse RT will be a major player in distributed, component-based development remains to be seen. Will it give Java's chopped and blocked (JSE, JEE, JME) component model a run for its money? Will it beat .Net at .Net's own multi-tier game? (Java) developers everywhere put their ears to the ground and hope. In the meantime, what is exciting is the wave - the promise and potential generated by this old-is-new technology. On that front, keep an ear out next week for Andy Glover's JavaWorld podcast interview with OSGi DZone leader Sebastien Arbogast, who has some very interesting, and balanced, things to say about the present and future of OSGi. For now, check out these articles - the first of many you will see in JavaWorld's ongoing coverage of the evolution of OSGi: Hello, OSGi: Part 1: Bundles for beginners Eclipse RT to stress component, runtime efforts Till next week -- Athen O'Shea Editor, JavaWorld This article is sponsored by Sun Solaris gives you freedom of choice.
