In order to support user authentication the backup server abstracts the concept of a UserManager to support any authentication mechanism you wish, and provides a simple implementation that reads user information from an XML file. In this update I also demonstrate how to create custom exceptions and fire them from your code. This week in the Java industry, SpringSource announced the public beta program of the SpringSource Tool Suite. If you're using Eclipse to develop Swing applications, then this is something that you should look at as it includes: task-focused tutorials, best-practice guides, anti-pattern detection, runtime error resolution, as well as tons of tools to help you build and manage Spring artifacts. On a personal note, I published a new white paper a couple weeks ago entitled A Formal Performance Tuning Methodology that is freely downloadable from Quest Software's web site. In this white paper I discuss how to optimally tune an enterprise Java environment by analyzing the architecture of your application and determining where, in that architecture, requests can wait. I found this methodology to be very helpful in tuning production environments as well as tuning test environments to maximize load and thus help identify performance problems before your users do.
