When I got started in 2003, .NET was relatively new. I think we'd just seen the upgrade to .NET 1.1 and Visual Studio 2003. We've now seen two major upgrades to the .NET Framework and Visual Studio. It's time that I updated my Book Recommendations to reflect the new world of .NET. We're in a transition period between .NET versions, though, which means that the .NET 2.0 books are dated, but the .NET 3.5 books haven't hit the shelves yet. Microsoft made Windows Vista Service Pack 1 available to MSDN customers a couple of weeks ago. This service pack addresses many issues in the areas of performance, networking, security, reliability, and hardware support. Although it's not generally available on Windows Update yet, it will be soon. From what I've seen, the changes in SP1 are A Good Thing, and I would recommend that anybody who's running Vista should upgrade. If you're interested in what's been changed and what to expect, you should read Mark Edward Soper's article, Windows Vista SP1: What to Expect.
