However, its moved on somewhat from the original concept. In case anyone is not sure what a bookmark is, web browsers have an option to bookmark this page in the top menu. This means you can store web pages in your browser and easily find them again later. Social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit etc. are social because other people can see what youre bookmarking, and you can see what others are bookmarking too. Bookmarks are then ranked according to popularity. i.e. the more people bookmarking a page, the higher the ranking. A bookmark is basically considered a vote for a page. Its a way for the community to decide which web pages are important, and considered an authority for a particular subject. Pages with the most votes move up the rankings and rise to the top pages of the social bookmarking sites. If you can get your site to the front page of a social bookmarking site it can generate a lot of traffic for you. The question is how targeted that traffic is. Personally I think direct traffic you gain from social bookmarking sites can work well for blogs and other information type sites, but its not so effective for ecommerce websites. Very low conversion rates because people going to bookmarking sites are generally looking for something interesting to read, not something to buy. However, there are other benefits to social bookmarking that are worth considering for all types of websites: Every time your website is bookmarked it creates an incoming link to your website. This is good for link building as part of your search engine optimisation strategy. Especially because these bookmarking sites carry lots of weight with the search engines. If your site is new, you can bookmark your page so that it is quickly picked up and indexed by the search engines. For example, Google rates social bookmarking sites highly and so visits them regularly for indexing. Placing a bookmark on a site such as Del.icio.us will mean google picks up your website much faster than links on most other sites. If you bookmark individual pages on your website it makes those pages stick around in the search engines for longer. If you dont have any links into specific web pages they tend to get dropped out of the search engines fairly quickly. So, if you have several different product pages its worth bookmarking the best ones on several bookmarking sites. You dont want to overdo it because you could get penalised (for spamming), so only bookmark your best stuff. Its also a good idea to get other people to bookmark your pages, not just yourself. You could form a group of likeminded individuals that support eachother in this kind of strategy. But remember, content is king. So make sure the content you bookmark is good quality.
